MIT Students Spend Three Weeks Teaching in Andorra: Enhancing Scientific Skills and Cross-Cultural Exchange
Five students from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States recently began a three-week teaching program at several secondary schools in Andorra, as part of the Global Teaching Lab initiative. Launched in 2017, this project allows future American engineers and scientists to teach subjects such as mathematics, science, and technology in English, while collaborating directly with local teachers.
This year, the MIT students joined five representative schools across Andorra’s three education systems: Col·legi Sant Ermengol, Lycée Comte de Foix, Escola Andorrana de Batxillerat, Centre de Formació Professional, and Col·legi Espanyol Maria Moliner. Their fields of study include aerospace engineering, political science, biology, computational and cognitive sciences, and materials science.
Co-financed by the Andorran government with a budget of €12,000, the program aims to improve Andorran students’ scientific skills and promote technical English proficiency. Andorra’s education system is recognized in Europe for combining strong academic foundations with practical learning, and its schools provide multilingual instruction in Catalan, Spanish, French, and English. By interacting with MIT students, local students enhance both scientific competencies and cross-cultural communication skills.
The program also offers a valuable intercultural experience for both local and MIT students, who live with volunteer host families during their stay. All travel expenses, medical insurance, and small allowances are covered, although the program is non-remunerated.
This week, Andorra’s education authorities, led by Xavier Campuzano and Albert Maluquer, welcomed the participants at the Ministry of Education. They highlighted the program’s uniqueness in format and educational impact, noting that previous editions have received very positive evaluations.

Cinq étudiants du prestigieux Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) aux États-Unis ont récemment entamé un séjour de trois semaines dans plusieurs établissements secondaires d’Andorre, dans le cadre du programme Global Teaching Lab. Lancé en 2017, ce projet permet aux futurs ingénieurs et scientifiques américains d’enseigner des matières telles que les mathématiques, les sciences ou la technologie en anglais, tout en collaborant directement avec les enseignants locaux.
Cette année, les étudiants du MIT se sont intégrés à cinq écoles représentatives des trois systèmes éducatifs d’Andorre : Col·legi Sant Ermengol, Lycée Comte de Foix, Escola Andorrana de Batxillerat, Centre de Formació Professional et Col·legi Espanyol Maria Moliner. Leurs domaines d’études incluent le génie aérospatial, les sciences politiques, la biologie, les sciences informatiques et cognitives, ainsi que la science des matériaux.
Co-financé par le gouvernement andorran avec un budget de 12 000 €, le programme vise à améliorer les compétences scientifiques des élèves andorrans et à promouvoir l’apprentissage de l’anglais technique. Le système éducatif andorran est reconnu en Europe pour son équilibre entre solides bases académiques et apprentissage pratique, et les écoles offrent un enseignement multilingue en catalan, espagnol, français et anglais. L’interaction avec les étudiants du MIT permet aux élèves locaux de développer à la fois leurs compétences scientifiques et leur capacité à communiquer dans un contexte interculturel.
Le programme offre également une expérience interculturelle précieuse pour les élèves locaux comme pour ceux du MIT, qui séjournent chez des familles d’accueil volontaires pendant leur séjour. Tous les frais de voyage, l’assurance médicale et de petites allocations sont pris en charge, bien que le programme ne soit pas rémunéré.
Cette semaine, les autorités éducatives andorranes, dirigées par Xavier Campuzano et Albert Maluquer, ont accueilli les participants au ministère de l’Éducation. Ils ont souligné l’unicité du programme, tant par sa forme que par son impact éducatif, rappelant que les éditions précédentes ont reçu des évaluations très positives.
