The Head of Government of Andorra, Xavier Espot, traveled to Rome to lead the official Andorran delegation attending the grand funeral of Pope Francis, together with the Archbishop of Urgell and Co-Prince Joan-Enric Vives. The French Co-Prince and President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, also attended in his dual role as Head of State of Andorra and President of France. The delegation was completed by the Ambassador to the Holy See, Carles Álvarez, the Coadjutor Bishop Josep Lluís Serrano, and the Secretary General of the Diocese of Urgell, David Codina.

Le coprince français et président de la République française, Emmanuel Macron, a également assisté en sa double qualité de chef d’État d’Andorre et de président de la France. Before 10 a.m., like the other official delegations from various countries, Co-Prince Vives and Head of Government Espot paid their respects before the coffin of Pope Francis. Later, they moved to St. Peter’s Square to attend the funeral, while Coadjutor Bishop Serrano was already positioned in the area reserved for bishops from around the world, following the ritual established by the Holy See for the death of a pontiff – the Ordo Exequiarum Romani Pontificis.

The Head of Government Espot stated that it was a day to pay tribute to Pope Francis and to support, as a nation, the important work he carried out. Espot specifically highlighted Francis’s efforts in promoting openness and inclusion, and his contributions in facing major challenges for humanity, such as climate change, social inequalities, and migration issues. “These are messages that we in Andorra strongly share, and we wish to contribute our part to addressing these challenges,” he said.

葬礼由枢机团团长乔瓦尼·巴蒂斯塔·雷主持，聚集了来自世界各地的枢机主教、宗主教、国家元首，以及超过14万名信徒。广场在仪式开始前便已人满为患，不得不封闭，大批信徒则通过街道大屏幕观看现场直播。
The ceremony was presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, gathering cardinals, patriarchs, heads of state from around the world, and over 140,000 faithful. St. Peter’s Square was already packed before the funeral began, leading to its closure, and many faithful followed the ceremony from the surrounding streets via large screens broadcasting the live event.
La cérémonie a été présidée par le doyen du Collège des cardinaux, Giovanni Battista Re, réunissant des cardinaux, des patriarches, des chefs d’État du monde entier et plus de 140 000 fidèles. Following papal funeral tradition, the ceremony used the liturgical color red, symbolizing martyrdom. Pope Francis’s body was first displayed before the Confession Altar of St. Peter’s Basilica, then the coffin was carried in procession by cardinals to the altar on the square, led by the Master of Ceremonies and a liturgical assistant carrying the Book of the Gospels. The Gospel Book was placed open atop the coffin to honor the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church.
Conformément à la tradition des funérailles papales, la cérémonie a utilisé la couleur liturgique rouge, symbole du martyre. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re delivered the homily in St. Peter’s Square, recalling the countless times Pope Francis’s voice had been heard there. Prayers during the funeral were said in six languages: for the Pope, for the Church, for the nations, for the souls of all past popes and priests, for deceased faithful, and for the assembly present.

After the funeral, the Church enters a nine-day mourning period known as “novendialis.” During these days, Masses will be celebrated for the soul of Pope Francis, each dedicated to a different group: the Papal Chapel, the Vatican faithful, the Diocese of Rome, the Roman Curia, the Eastern Churches, religious congregations, and other ecclesiastical institutions. A funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Urgell at 11 a.m. on Tuesday 29th, and another at 8 p.m. at Sant Esteve Church in Andorra la Vella.
Après les funérailles, l’Église entre dans une période de neuf jours de deuil appelée “novendialis”. Pendant cette période, des messes seront célébrées pour l’âme du pape François, chacune dédiée à un groupe différent : la chapelle papale, les fidèles du Vatican, le diocèse de Rome, la Curie romaine, les Églises orientales, les religieux et d’autres institutions ecclésiales. Une messe funéraire aura lieu à la cathédrale Santa Maria d’Urgell le mardi 29 à 11h, et une autre à 20h à l’église Sant Esteve d’Andorra la Vella.
